Treatments
EECP, or enhanced external counterpulsation, is a non-invasive outpatient treatment option. This page explains how it works, what it may offer, and who may be considered for it.
Treatment decisions should always follow an individual physician review.
Potential benefits
Research and clinical experience describe possible benefits for circulation and stamina. Individual responses vary, and no result is guaranteed.
EECP is intended to encourage blood flow through the coronary and peripheral circulation during treatment sessions.
Some people report improved tolerance for everyday activity. Changes in stamina differ from person to person.
EECP is delivered externally through cuffs, without surgery, and is commonly provided as an outpatient treatment.
The process
EECP uses sequential pneumatic compression timed to the cardiac cycle. Each step is explained before treatment begins.
Soft cuffs are fitted around the calves, thighs, and buttocks, and the clinician confirms comfortable positioning.
Cuffs inflate in sequence during the heart's resting phase, guided by the electrocardiogram signal.
Vital signs are observed throughout the session, and the care team reviews how you feel before you leave.
Suitability
Suitability for EECP depends on your cardiac history, current medications, and overall health. A physician reviews these factors individually before recommending any treatment.
Because outcomes vary, EECP is not guaranteed to produce a particular result. Your care team will explain what may be reasonable to expect for your circumstances.
